Electric skateboard FAQ: battery life, rain, brakes and flying

Short answers first: a well-treated lithium-ion battery can typically give several hundred charge cycles, and it lasts longest stored part-charged and out of the heat. Treat every board as not waterproof, expect weaker braking on a full battery, and do not count on flying with one, because most boards carry more than the 160 Wh passenger limit.

How long does an electric skateboard battery last?

Battery life depends on charge cycles, and on age and heat. Battery University notes that manufacturers conservatively rate lithium-ion batteries in most consumer products at 300 to 500 full cycles. Shallower cycles go further: its estimate for NMC cells is about 300 cycles running from full to empty, but about 1,000 cycles using only 40% of the charge between top-ups, counted until capacity falls to 70%.

Our spec data does not list cell chemistry, so treat those numbers as general lithium-ion guidance, not a promise for a specific board.

How should you store an electric skateboard?

Two things wear out a battery that is sitting still: a high charge level and heat. Battery University treats anything above 30°C as elevated temperature, and says sitting fully charged in the heat can be more stressful than regular charging and use. Its storage estimates show the difference:

  • Store it part-charged. Battery University's storage guide suggests about 40%, and our FAQ recommends 40-70% for longer breaks.
  • Never park it flat. The same guide says stored lithium-ion needs some charge so the cells do not drop low enough to trigger protective sleep mode.
  • Keep it cool. The guide recommends 15°C for most batteries, so not a car boot in summer or a sunny windowsill.

Charging in winter

Riding on a cold morning is fine, though expect a little less range until the pack warms up - our guide to electric skateboard range covers why. Charging a frozen battery is not fine. Battery University gives 0°C to 45°C as the charge range for lithium-ion, warns that charging below freezing plates metallic lithium onto the anode and causes permanent damage, and suggests 10°C to 30°C for best results. If the board spent the night in a cold garage or car, let it warm up indoors and charge it at room temperature, as our FAQ advises.

How long does each board we sell take to charge?

These figures come from our product spec data. Whichever board you own, charge it only with the charger supplied with it.

Charge time does not track battery size neatly: the 720 Wh Spartan is listed at about 4 hours, while the 336 Wh Phantom is listed at 4-5 hours. Plan around the figure for your own board.

Can you ride an electric skateboard in the rain?

Our advice is no. None of the boards we sell lists a water resistance or IP rating in its specifications, so treat all of them as not waterproof. Water damage is also excluded from our 6-month local warranty, as our FAQ sets out.

What an IP rating would tell you

The IP code, defined in the international standard IEC 60529, states tested protection against dust and water, and the second digit covers water. We could not open the IEC's own page, so this rests on the Wikipedia summary of the standard:

  • IPX4: splashing water from any direction does no harm.
  • IPX5: protected against water jets from a nozzle.
  • IPX6: protected against powerful water jets.
  • IPX7: protected against immersion up to 1 metre deep.

Above IPX6 the ratings are not cumulative, so an IPX7 product has not necessarily passed the jet tests. "Water resistant" with no number tells you very little.

Wet roads cost you grip as well

Boundmotor's rider safety notes warn that wet or icy pavement risks a loss of traction and control, and that any amount of water could damage a board's electronics. Caught in a shower? Carry the board, switch it off, wipe it down and let it dry indoors before charging. If it behaves oddly afterwards, stop riding and get it checked.

How does braking work on an electric skateboard?

On many electric skateboards, including Evolve's, the motors that drive you also slow you down. Pull back on the remote and the speed controller (ESC) makes the motors resist the wheels, acting as generators that feed some energy back into the battery. Evolve's explainer calls this regenerative braking. Our spec data lists the Relentless and Apex with electronic regenerative braking, the Nova and Phantom with an electronic brake system (EBS), the Spartan with a 36 V dual-drive ESC and the DNASkate V4 with ESC smooth braking.

Why is braking weaker on a full battery?

Regenerative braking needs somewhere to put the energy. Evolve explains that a fully charged pack cannot accept that current, so the system reduces braking force to protect the battery. Boundmotor goes further, warning that braking downhill on a full battery will shut its boards down and cause a temporary loss of braking. Our spec data does not say how each model behaves at 100%, so assume every board is affected.

  • Burn off the top of the charge first. Ride flat ground or uphill for a while before any descent, never downhill straight off the charger.
  • Brake early and in short applications rather than one long drag.
  • Learn to carve and foot-brake as a back-up, and only ride hills you could stop on without powered brakes.
  • Dress for a fall: a certified helmet and full-finger riding gloves.

Can you take an electric skateboard on a plane?

Usually not as luggage. The IATA guidance for passengers travelling with lithium batteries, revised for the 2026 regulations, classifies small personal transport vehicles as portable electronic devices and notes that most have batteries above 160 Wh. IATA's baseline depends on the battery's watt-hour rating:

Checked devices must be completely switched off, and airlines can be stricter than this baseline. FlySafair's lithium battery rules allow devices with lithium-ion batteries in carry-on baggage only, never checked, and 101 Wh to 160 Wh needs express airline approval before travel. The US Federal Aviation Administration's PackSafe page tells travellers to check whether their airline accepts battery-powered recreational vehicles at all, noting that many do not. South African Airways' restricted items page prohibits hoverboards in both hand and checked baggage. Neither South African airline page names electric skateboards, so get the airline's answer in writing before you book.

IATA calculates watt-hours as amp-hours multiplied by nominal voltage. Our spec data gives neither a Wh figure nor a voltage for the Origins or Apex, so their band cannot be worked out from the listing, and IATA says airline staff may refuse a battery whose Wh rating they cannot verify.

Sending the board by courier

We ship boards from Johannesburg in packaging that meets courier requirements for lithium-ion goods, but we have not checked each courier's rules for a board you send yourself. Before you book:

  • Ask your courier whether it accepts a board with a lithium-ion battery, and how to declare it.
  • Ask whether the parcel travels by road or air, because batteries over 160 Wh may only fly as cargo under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
  • Use the original box if you still have it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I charge my board to 100% every time?

Charging to full before a ride is fine. Leaving it full for days, especially somewhere warm, is what wears the battery, and braking may be weaker for the first stretch.

Can I hose down or pressure-wash my board?

No. Even the IPX5 and IPX6 jet tests run at far lower pressure than the separate high-pressure wash-down ratings such as IPX9K, and none of our boards lists any IP rating. Wipe the deck and wheels with a damp cloth and keep water away from the electronics.

Where do I find my board's watt-hour rating?

IATA says lithium-ion batteries are required to carry a Wh marking on the outside of the battery case. For five of our boards the Wh figure is in the tables above. For the Origins and Apex, ask us before you contact an airline.
