Electric Skateboard Weight Limits: A Guide for Heavier Riders

The rated load on an electric skateboard is a safety limit, not a suggestion, and it is set by the weakest component in the chain — usually the deck's flex limit, the trucks, or the motor's thermal cut-out. Ride above it and the board does not simply feel slower: the deck flexes further, the motor runs hotter and derates, braking distance grows, and the components that were sized for a lighter load wear out early. Most electric skateboards sold in South Africa are rated to 120 kg and a few to 150 kg, which leaves heavier riders with a genuinely narrow field. This guide explains what the number means, what to actually plan for, and which boards are rated where.

What the number is actually measuring

A load rating is not a single measurement. It is the point at which the first component in the chain reaches its design limit, and different boards fail differently:

  • The deck. A laminated maple or bamboo deck has a flex curve. Beyond its rating it flexes further on every impact, which accelerates delamination and changes how the board handles at speed.
  • The trucks and bearings. Side loads in a turn scale with rider mass. Overloaded bearings run hot and fail early.
  • The motor's thermal cut-out. This is the one people meet first in practice. A motor moving more mass draws more current, produces more heat, and hits its thermal limit sooner — usually on a hill, usually at the worst moment. The board cuts power to protect itself.

Because the motor is normally the binding constraint, the symptom a heavier rider notices first is not a broken deck. It is a board that loses power partway up a gradient it managed yesterday when it was cooler.

The 85% rule

A practical working rule: aim to be at or under about 85% of the rated load, including whatever you are carrying. A backpack with a laptop and a water bottle is easily 5–8 kg, and it counts.

That means a 120 kg-rated board comfortably suits a rider up to roughly 100 kg with a bag. A 150 kg rating suits a rider up to roughly 125 kg. This is not manufacturer conservatism — it is headroom for the hills, the heat and the years, all three of which reduce the margin you started with.

What to buy at each weight

Under 60 kg: the whole fleet is open to you, including the Nova at R4,499. Choose on terrain and distance instead.

60–100 kg: everything except the Nova. Pick on surface and range — Phantom for commuting and best value, Spartan for distance, Apex or Relentless off the tar.

100–127 kg: the 150 kg and 200 kg-rated boards give you real headroom. On tar, the Spartan at R14,999. Off the tar, or if you want the largest load margin in the fleet, the Apex at R17,999.
