Off-road is the category where marketing and engineering drift furthest apart. A board can be sold as all-terrain because it has treaded wheels while everything behind those wheels is street hardware, and it will be fine on a gravel driveway and unhappy on anything else. South Africa is a good country for genuine off-road riding and a bad one for pretending, because our dirt is hard-packed, rocky and full of loose surface. This guide is about the parts that decide whether a board copes.
What makes a board genuinely off-road
Four things, and tread is only one of them.
- Wheel diameter. A 70 mm street wheel stops dead against an obstacle a 140 mm wheel rolls over. Diameter is the single biggest determinant of what a board can cross.
- Drive type. Torque off tar comes from gearing, and gearing means belt drive.
- Truck width and deck construction. Wider trucks give a stable platform when the surface is throwing the board around, and the deck absorbs impact loads a street deck never sees.
- Thermal headroom. Off-road riding is a long sequence of low-speed, high-current moments. A motor that is comfortable on tar can be near its limit in soft ground.
A board with treaded wheels, hub motors, narrow trucks and a street deck is a street board with grip. That is not useless, it is just not the category it is being sold as. Everything in our All-Terrain and Off-Road range is belt driven for exactly this reason.
Pneumatic tyres versus airless honeycomb
Pneumatic tyres are air-filled. Air is an excellent spring: it absorbs impact progressively and can be tuned by pressure, so the same tyre is a comfort setup at low pressure and an efficiency setup at high pressure. The comfort ceiling is higher than anything airless reaches. The cost is punctures. Thorns, glass and wire are a genuine feature of South African verges, and a puncture on a board is far more inconvenient than one on a bicycle, because almost nobody carries a repair kit or a pump for one.
Airless honeycomb wheels replace the air chamber with a moulded flexible structure. They absorb noticeably more than solid polyurethane and less than a pneumatic of the same size, and they cannot go flat. The Relentless 140 x 50 mm airless honeycomb wheels are the pattern: big enough for obstacle clearance, compliant enough to take the sting out of broken tar and gravel, and immune to the thing that ends most off-road rides early.
Choose by failure mode. If you ride land you know and want maximum comfort, pneumatic is the better ride. If you ride unfamiliar ground, or far from where you parked, airless is the better ownership experience.
Why every serious off-road board is belt driven
A hub motor sits inside the wheel and drives it directly, so its gearing is fixed by the motor. A belt drive puts the motor beside the wheel and drives it through a pulley, and that pulley ratio is a gear reduction. Gear reduction multiplies torque, which is exactly what you need moving a loaded board up a loose gradient at walking pace.
Belt drive also frees up the wheel. Because the motor is not inside it, the wheel can be a full-thickness tyre with real sidewall compliance rather than a thin band wrapped around a motor housing. The trade-offs are real: belts wear, belt drives are audible where hub motors are near-silent, and there is more exposed hardware to keep clean. Trucks, deck and what actually absorbs the terrain
Most off-road boards, ours included, do not have suspension in the automotive sense. What absorbs terrain is the tyre first, the deck second and your knees third, in that order. That makes deck construction a performance specification rather than a cosmetic one.
The Relentless uses a five-layer maple and five-layer bamboo deck. Bamboo gives flex and vibration damping, maple gives stiffness and impact strength, and the combination takes the edge off a rough surface without feeling vague under power. The Apex takes the opposite approach with eight layers of Canadian maple, stiffer and less forgiving, but supporting the highest rated load in our range at 200 kg. Truck width does the rest: the Relentless runs 10-inch double-layer trucks, which make the board far more settled at speed and over uneven ground than a narrow street truck would be.
Off-road range: why you derate harder than you think
Rated range is measured on smooth ground at steady speed, and off-road riding breaks every one of those assumptions. Rolling resistance on gravel and hard-packed dirt is far higher than on tar. Terrain forces constant throttle modulation instead of a steady cruise, and acceleration is where current goes. Gradient is usually part of the point. And bigger, heavier wheels take more energy to spin up every time you slow down and speed up again.
On tar we tell people to plan for 70 to 85 percent of rated range. Off-road, plan for materially less. A 50 km board on a genuine off-road route is a comfortable 25 km board, and that is the number to plan your ride around.

Buy the Apex if rated load is the constraint. At 200 kg it carries more than anything else we sell, and if you are a heavier rider, or you ride with a loaded pack, that single specification outranks everything else. It is also two thousand rand cheaper.
Buy the Relentless if distance is the constraint. Double the rated range, a 648 Wh pack, and a deck built to stay comfortable across that distance rather than just survive it. It charges in about half the time, which matters more than it sounds when a full day means two rides. At 16 kg it is a board you ride from where you park rather than one you carry far.

Where you can legally ride off-road in South Africa
Going off-road does not escape the legal question, it changes it. Public roads remain closed to electric skateboards because no vehicle registration category exists for them under the National Road Traffic Act, which we cover in our guide to whether electric skateboards are legal in South Africa. Off tar, the governing question becomes access rather than registration: national parks, provincial reserves, municipal open space and private land each set their own rules on motorised vehicles, and those rules differ from one property to the next.
The practical version is that you need a landowner or managing authority who has said yes. Farms, smallholdings and privately managed trail land are where this is easiest to arrange. Do not assume that because a trail is open to mountain bikes it is open to a motorised board, because that is frequently the exact distinction the rules turn on.

Can an off-road electric skateboard handle sand?
Hard-packed sand and short grass, yes. Deep loose sand and thick mud, no. Those exceed what a board of this size and ground clearance can do regardless of power.
Do I need to replace belts?
Eventually, yes. Belts are a wear item on any belt-driven board and the trade you accept for the torque and the full-size tyres. Check them along with wheels, trucks and hardware before a ride.
